How Does Anger Affect Mental Health?

I am not an expert, but I do have an angry wife. She shouts a lot. She is angry, because her Dad was angry. Her Dad was Angry because her Grandmother was angry. They say anger grows out of entitlement. All three generations are / were entitled. Where does this feeling of entitlement come from? That is another good question.

Affect on Others

If anger persists, then others in the house will become angry, if it is shown that anger “works”. I am very careful to make sure that my wife gains nothing from her anger. If she angrily insists I tidy something up, it will remain there until I am asked politely. In this way I hope that my kids will not observe anger being used to effect a result. Anger also invalidates. If a child drops a glass of water, and is shouted at as a consequence, then dropping a glass of water becomes serious problem (when it actually isn’t) if this is repeated for other minor problems, then the child will quickly start to avoid doing any task, for fear of anger. I am not sure but this fear of failure can reach well in to adulthood.

Affect on Perpetrator

My wife feels terrible after she is angry. It is an involuntary thing for her, and she is at the point now where she feels bad about it afterwards. However, for many anger is a defence mechanism, and in such cases it makes them feel powerful. In many cases the power they crave is to make up for shortcomings in their confidence, or to overcome fears, both of which may have been established many years ago.

Like I say, I am not a mental health expert, but I have observed anger for years, and read up on causes and coping mechanisms for the last few years.
